Daily Life At Camp
At Exchange Path, we recruit for many different camps — each with its own traditions, schedules and activities. As there are so many, it’s hard to give an exact breakdown of what to expect on a typical day. The schedule below should give you a general idea.
Our promise
From wake-up bell to lights out — your day, hour by hour.
Times shift slightly camp-to-camp — but the rhythm is the same.
07:30 am
Wake Up
Rise and shine — it's time to get your campers ready for the day. If your camp is old school, a bell or a camp bugle might get things underway. Some camps even offer the perfect way to wake your campers up — helping clear up the barn, or a fresh dip in the lake.
08:00 am
Flag Raising
Every morning, the whole camp gathers around the flagpole for the Pledge of Allegiance. Cabins take it in turns to raise the flag, and campers and staff can suggest songs to sing — or report something as lost (plenty of hairbrushes go missing at camp!).
08:15 am
Breakfast
Eat up — you'll need the fuel for the day ahead. Food varies camp to camp, but expect cereal, hot food, fruit and veggie options. Breakfast is also when camp leaders make any official announcements.
09:00 am
Cabin Clean-up
Once breakfast wraps, you head back to your cabin to tidy up. The cleanest cabins usually win a prize each week — kids take it pretty seriously.
09:30 am
Morning Activities
There are usually four or five activity periods in a day. Sailing, horse riding, basketball, crafting, climbing — a great chance to teach your skill or jump in and try something new with your cabin.
12:00 pm
Lunch
Meals at camp are something else. Singing, chanting, announcements, table games — you'll quickly forget what it's like to eat any other way.
1:00 pm
Rest Period
American summers can hit 35°C+ at some camps — so the early-afternoon rest period is a great chance to get out of the sun and grab some downtime.
1:45 pm
Afternoon Activities
After a quick rest, campers get stuck into another set of activities — water-skiing, movie-making, dance sessions and archery might all be on the list.
4:30 pm
General Swim / Free Time
Whether you fancy hitting the lake for a swim or shooting some hoops, the free time is yours. A typical day at camp is hectic — downtime is always needed.
6:00 pm
Dinner Time
After an activity-packed day you'll be craving some food — and there's always something good on the menu. Corn dogs, Philly cheesesteaks, spaghetti, pizza, you name it.
7:30 pm
After-Dinner Activities
Lots of camps run themed weeks — Wild West, Mario Kart, Harry Potter or superhero nights might be on offer. Other evenings could be talent shows, capture the flag or silent discos.
9:30 pm
Lights Out
Lights out is staggered by camper age. After lights out you may be on cabin duty or you may have the night off — either way, get some sleep so you're rested up for tomorrow.
Heads-up: these times are a guide. Some camps run two morning and two afternoon blocks, others swap rest period for cabin time, and most have at least one big “super day” where the schedule goes out the window. Exchange Path talks you through your specific camp’s routine before you fly.
